It was March 1983 when I started my new career as an Editorial Manager cum Chief Editor of Penerbit Fajar Bakti Sdn. Bhd in Petaling Jaya. I quit my job as Editor of Dewan Masyarakat, a magazine published by Dewn Bahasa dan Pustaka.. During the course of my career as an Editorial Manager and later Editorial Director with reknown International Publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP), United Kingdom with its Penerbit Fajar Bakti (PFB) Branch in Kuala Lumpur, I have had the opportunity to engage in publishing works, supervising a team of experienced editors dealing largely with Dictionaries, Academic and General titles . Since then it was no turning back for me and later I opted to become a publisher, while at the same time accepted the offer as publishing consultant with Yayasan Warisan Johore (YWJ). I was with YWJ for a number of years , with my main focus then was doing research on the Johore State Royalty, which was later compliled and written under the title Sejarah Adat-Istiadat Kesultanan Johor, co-uthored with Zam Ismail the then Deputy Director of YWJ.. It was a tremendous experience The following are some of the titles published with me having a hand in the process of getting them published, either as an author, contributor or as publisher. .

INTERESTING TO KNOW JUST HOW MUCH HONORARIUM DID THE AUTHOR/S RECEIVE ANNUALLY FROM ALL THESE BOOKS? I WONDER WHETHER THE AUTHOR/S CAN SURVIVE AFTER ALL LOT OF BOOKS HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED.
Masih terbayang ketika seorang Abah membawa anak kecil sulungnya ketika itu baru berusia sekitar tujuh tahun ke Madrasah Ulu Gadong, Kota masuk Kelas Dewasa bahasa Inggeris dan belajar bahasa itu bersama sekumpulan orang kampung yang berminat mempelajari bahasa penjajah itu. Seorang Abah yang pada masa yang sama mengajar sebagai ustaz di madrasah berkenaan. Al-Fatihah buat Abah.
Kalau bicara tentang honorarium untuk buku jenis umum begini jangan haraplah. Tak berbloi. Nak untung tulis buku novel remaja atau buku kanak-kanak. Itu pun kalau tersenarai dalam buku wajib baca di sekolah-sekolah. Buku umum begini hanya akan dapat honorarium jika menjadi buku tek di sekolah-sekolah. Setiap buku jenis umum begini kalau pun dah dapat bayar balik kos menulisnya sudah cukup bagus. Saya yakin untuk sebuah judul yang dicetak 1000 naskah paling banyak honorarium diterima RM600 berdasrkan setiap naskah royaltinya 6%. Dan penerbit nak habiskan 1000 naskah itu kena tunggu dua tahun. Itu pun belum tentu boleh habis. Itulah nasib buku umum. Yang menulis ini hanya sekadar ingin mendapat kepuasan peribadi kerana berjaya menghasilkan karya dan ada yang mahu menerbitkannya.
